Summary: And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.
#15 Yetzer Ra
Nik had never thought of himself as sinful, despite his numerous illegal acts. He had killed yes, but the lot of them, every single worthless piece of shit, needed killing. He had stolen yes, but just enough for him to get by. He had lusted, been unfaithful, when certain types of young women came into his life and Cel had deliberately turned a blind eye. She let him have his freedom, because she knew he would always return to her. She knew.
But that night he had come home, mind running on beer and drugs and he was so high, he was just floating, pretty colors across the sky. That night, he had stumbled into their bedroom, eyes unfocused, pulse thumping like a rabbit and he had shoved Cel down. She let him, he knew that - no way could he have matched the former leader of Flare in combat - everything, every action, she let him and the next morning, she had held his head as he vomited and fed him chicken soup to keep him hydrated.
He closed his eyes (a coward's move, he knew) because all he could see was the long line of bruises up her face, around her arm, her ribcage, her legs, her inner thighs, and the weight of his sin was strong enough to crush him.
#06 - Karma
Cel had never had an easy life - she had seen sights never meant to be seen, done things she had not been very proud of. So when Nik had stumbled into the bedroom, the old, sour smell of alcohol and drugs and sex heavy on his breath, it had in many ways felt like karma, like retribution, for everything she had done before.
She fell, cheek striking the cold hard floor hard enough for vertigo to set in. When he hauled her up, she knew it was going to leave bruises. She knew what color, shape and texture it would be come morning - she had left it on so many many many of her victims.
She had spread her legs for him.
She had let him do what he will, partially because she loved him (Cel knew she tended to misjudge her own strength, especially when she fought. If she retaliated, she might do him irrevocable harm) but more because it was the revenge that her victims never got to have. The justice they deserved which she could not give them (she had too much to live for now and she has never claimed she was not selfish).
The next morning, she had made chicken soup and held Nik and told him it was okay. It was karma. That's all.
#16 - Zen
"There are absolutely no problems on this premises Ma'am," Nik smiled down at the kind-looking young woman with his best aw-shucks smile. He could tell she was moved by it - he had dropped women into swoons with his aw-shucks smile. (Of course, Cel just smacked him upside the head). "We take excellent care of our charges."
There was a short burst of excited shouts and hollers as the kids stampeded up the stairs, clearly having done some mischief and excited about it. Cel followed close behind - her footsteps much louder. "I swear, one of these days," she hollered down at him. "I'm going to murder the lot of them and feed them to you in meat pies."
"Find your zen place Cel," Nik hollered back and smiled, once again, at the social worker.
