#32 - Sorrow
Most people measure the worth of their lives with the number of love affairs, the number of moments that take their breath away; the Sorrows clan measure the worth of their lives with the number of grievances, and heartbreaks because it meant that they were strong enough to endure all the crap through their lives and still keep on going with their head held up high.

#50 - Defeat
To Rath, Lucif Macara was a reflection of everything he hated, a living representation of all his dreams that had rotted like so many over-ripe fruit that will never bear seed, a breathing symbol of all the innocence torn out and sacrificed upon the altar of duty and loyalty and honor, a silent judge of all the times he was not (strong, brave, good) enough for the people he had vowed to protect.

Hot air balloons always held a special place in Rath's memories - to him, it was like standing on top of the world, up in a place where the only sound was the soft whistling of the wind and the people (and troubles) were barely discernable - but the one memory he ever treasured was the first time he took Lucif on one by force and the way she had clung to him, shrieking death threats in his ear if he didn't bring them back in one piece (the tight press of bodies, her warmth seeping through, her hair smelling of blood and rosemary) and how he couldn't stop smiling.
#02 - Waltz
It was a running joke within the Court that Lady Macara did not (can not) dance, and yet all eyes in the ballroom were on Lucif as she descended down the stairs and as Rath led her unto the dance floor - Lucif just prayed to any available deity that no one will notice if she stepped on Rath's foot.
#39 - Share
Rath knew very well that Lucif hated secrets - his above all else for despite all her digging, she could never find any personal history - but Rath's a selfish bastard and he didn't want her to know (to be tainted, to pity, or, Goddess help them all, to be diplomatic) and so he would distract her (searing lips, burning touches, anonymity in the darkness of the night).

After years of fighting back-to-back, surviving together, it was only natural that at some point their lips would find each other's one night after a bloody skirmish and that their kisses would lead to desperate touches of something real and so on to the point that all that they leave behind in the morning were rumpled bedsheets and a broken bedframe with a note of apology to the hotel management.

Rath didn't know if it was only him or the fruits of his upbringing or because it was just so simply Lucif, but as he fell, pulling her down with him in a flurry of silk and hair, and laughter on his part while Lucif muttered uncomplimentary things about his physique and ancestry, in that moment, all was right with the world once more.
#10 - Weddings
#38 - Sojourn
Rath had promised himself that when Rien was finally crowned and Mirai found her place in the Court, he would leave - that he will do his duty, what he owned to these bratlings he helped brought up and all this was just temporary; in present times, he was beginning to find it difficult to remember his promise.
#43 - Nuance
Lucif wasn't sure how she felt about the way Rath's name had become a common cuss word, to be spat out in seedy bars and among casual friends, but she knew the first time that someone told her she was a Rath-bastard that she was almost insulted - she thought she had done a fine job been bastardly all on her own.

When Rath was young, he had made it a point to take no one's side but his own and to watch out for his own neck above all else, but lately he'd found himself breaking bones and actually honest-to-goodness insulted on behalf of Rien or Mirai over barroom comments he overhead, and he wondered just what the hell happened.
#46 Horizon
It was years and years later, when the wars have ended and domestic policies no longer required each region to build war shelters and children were no longer being taught how to defend themselves with swords twice their size, that Lucif looked back at all that she had done and forward at all that needed to be done and then looked beside her at the one constant in her life and realized, somewhere along the line, that she had fallen in love.
